Overview
Voltpost, the lamppost EV charging company, is supporting Michigan’s electric mobility goals by transforming existing lampposts into connected, modular EV chargers. Through collaborations with public agencies, innovation hubs, and mobility leaders, Voltpost is demonstrating how urban infrastructure can be upgraded to deliver widespread, cost-effective access to charging.
Michigan Goals
Michigan’s Future Mobility Plan aims to install 100,000 EV chargers to support 2 million electric vehicles by 2030. Meeting this target requires scalable, affordable solutions that can be implemented quickly in cities across the state. Voltpost offers a way to meet that need by utilizing existing infrastructure.
The City of Detroit aims to provide an EV charger every 3–5 miles, building on its current network of 60 public sites with 300 Level 2 chargers through both city-owned and private installations. Through the Detroit Charge Ahead program, the city is expanding charging at recreation centers, universities, parking garages, and retail lots, with a focus on equitable access, economic development, and supporting zero-emission mobility.
Phase 1
Detroit Pilot
In August 2022, Voltpost was awarded a grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Michigan Mobility Funding Platform. This grant supported the deployment of Voltpost’s lamppost charging platform at the Detroit Smart Parking Lab (DSPL), an innovation hub sponsored by Ford, Bedrock, Bosch, NextEnergy, and the MEDC. At DSPL, Voltpost:
This early work laid the foundation for expanding Voltpost's presence in the Detroit region.
Phase 2
Michigan Expansion
In June 2025, Voltpost completed the first public deployment in Michigan at the American Center for Mobility (ACM) in Ypsilanti Township, just outside Detroit. ACM is a nationally designated mobility testbed that provides a real-world environment to validate transportation technologies. The installation was celebrated at SAFE Demo Day 2025 with a public ribbon-cutting.
The ACM installation is the first of many Voltpost chargers being installed across Detroit and surrounding areas, supported by:
Michigan Perspectives
“The Voltpost charger is an excellent example of activating opportunities for new mobility through innovation — creating meaningful, transformative change. Our goal is to make charging accessible for everyone, whether they live in a single-family or multifamily setting.”
— Justine Johnson, Chief Mobility Officer and Head of the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification
“At the American Center for Mobility, we are proud to serve as a testbed for pioneering mobility solutions that benefit both industry and community. Collaborating with Voltpost to deploy this new EV charging technology enhances our mobility ecosystem and provides a meaningful step toward more sustainable urban transportation.”
— Reuben Sarkar, President and CEO, American Center for Mobility
“Expanding access to EV charging is critical to building a more inclusive transportation future. The installation of Voltpost’s lamppost charger at the American Center for Mobility demonstrates how we can repurpose existing infrastructure to bring convenient, affordable charging to the community.”
— Jim Saber, CEO, NextEnergy
Charging Ahead
Following the successful launch at ACM, additional Voltpost chargers will be installed at other pre-selected sites in the Detroit region. These deployments further support Michigan’s clean mobility goals and serve as a replicable model for urban areas nationwide.
