Voltpost Wins Grants from U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation to Deploy Lamppost EV Chargers in Communities Across the Country

Deployments will expand convenient, affordable Level 2 EV charging access for drivers without home chargers.

New York, N.Y. January 16, 2025— Voltpost, the lamppost electric vehicle (EV) charging company, has secured grant funding for two projects from the U.S. Joint Office of Energy and Transportation (Joint Office) Communities Taking Charge Accelerator. The Joint Office funding will enable Voltpost to deploy their platform in communities across the country, empowering drivers with access to convenient, affordable electric vehicle chargers.

"Voltpost is on a mission to decarbonize mobility by democratizing charging access and empowering communities nationwide,” said Jeffrey Prosserman, CEO and Co-Founder of Voltpost. “By leveraging lampposts to cost-effectively and rapidly increase access to EV charging infrastructure, we aim to enable more drivers across the country to confidently transition from gas to electric and mitigate the transportation sector’s climate impact. We are deeply grateful to our partners for their collaboration and shared commitment to creating a more sustainable and equitable transportation sector."

“American organizations continue to innovate within energy and transportation, building toward a more connected, scalable, and resilient zero-emission infrastructure,” said Debs Schrimmer, Senior Advisor, Community and Urban Charging for the Joint Office. “This project from Voltpost is another example of this potential, and we’re excited to see its progress.”

Voltpost received $2.6 million to deploy 75 Level 2 chargers, curbside and in commuter lots, across the Tri-state region—New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut—to expand access for drivers without at-home EV chargers. The project will be completed in partnership with Zipcar, CityFi, INF Associates, Empire Clean Cities, Clean Cities NJ, Capitol Clean Cities, South CT Cities, and West CT Cities.

The Voltpost chargers will support the deployment of up to 30 Zipcar EVs throughout the Tri-state region to promote alternative sustainable transportation options for low-income residents. For multifamily renters, owners, and others without home charging, Voltpost’s solution aims to encourage neighbors to share charging infrastructure, enable convenient charging access, and accelerate EV adoption via Zipcar, the world’s leading car-sharing network.

"Empowering communities with access to electric vehicles and charging infrastructure is a pivotal step toward a more equitable and sustainable future,” said Angelo Adams, Head of Zipcar. “By providing communities with electric car sharing options, we aim to ensure that more people can easily  access and experience the benefits of clean, shared  transportation."

The project partners are committed to prioritizing M/WBE contractors with prevailing wages within each state. They will also provide Zipcar memberships and driving credits to Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) trainees, and Zipcar is committed to placing a portion of its fleet in Justice40 communities. Voltpost is also committed to creating jobs in underserved communities in the region.

"Cityfi is proud to support these projects and the deployment of EV charging infrastructure to accelerate sustainable cities,” said Kyle Ragan of Cityfi. “Leveraging our expertise in urban innovation, policy, and partnerships, we will support cities to create scalable public charging solutions."

Voltpost is also collaborating with LACI through the incubator’s City Climate Innovation Challenge—an initiative designed to expand access for privately-owned electric mobility by utilizing innovative curbside charging approaches and optimizing charger access through curb management compliance interventions. Voltpost will work with LACI to spearhead charger deployments in communities across the country, including in Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington, D.C. At least 40% of deployments will be in Justice40 communities.

"Equitable access to EV charging is essential for building a sustainable and inclusive future,” said Michelle Kinman, SVP of Market Transformation at LACI. “We are excited to collaborate with Voltpost to accelerate the deployment of innovative, cost-effective chargers in cities across the country to ensure more communities benefit from sustainable transportation options."
